Cooking and Nutrition in Year 6

The children worked in groups and mastered their peeling and chopping techniques. They practised using the potato peeler and how to use it safely and efficiently. They knew that they had to peel away from their hands. They used knives to dice potatoes, onions and carrots using the claw grip, tunnel grip and lever technique. They cut the vegetables in half so that they were flat. They found that this was the safest way to do it and allowed them to maintain a steady surface for chopping. The children now know the difference between cutting and chopping. We also discussed the use of a chopping board and how it is important to use a different board when chopping different ingredients.
