Ticket to ride topic.
This half term our topic in Nursery has been about vehicles and journeys. We have talked about our own holiday and journey experiences and the ways that we travel to different places. We have compared hot and cold places to visit and have talked about our own dislikes and likes. In our role play area we have developed a travel agents and have experienced booking holidays, acting as the assistant to answer the phone and help customers and looked at travel brochures.
As part of this topic we enjoyed a book called ‘Peppa in London’ which is all about Peppa Pig visiting different famous landmarks in London. We can now talk about Big Ben, the London eye and Buckingham palace and it was great to celebrate King Charles’s coronation which fortuitously came in the middle of this topic. We made crowns, decorated flags, learned about the Royal Family and dressed in red, white and blue to celebrate coronation day with our friends by having a picnic. We made our own jam sandwiches and made a London bus to pretend play that we were going to the palace to take part in the real celebrations.
Our topic then moved on to other famous countries and landmarks, namely Paris in France, Spain, Italy and America. We built the Eiffel tower with bricks, looked at the flags of different countries and tried to represent their patterns with pegs. We used play dough mats showing pictures of famous landmarks and even had a tasting day, where we tasted French baguette, rice, pasta and hot dogs to make links with the different foods from different cultures. We are planning to look at Art from both France and England next, making our own pictures to represent the famous work of Matisse, Mondrian and Banksy.
